PGA’s vision is to contribute to the creation of a Rules-Based International Order for a more equitable, safe, sustainable and democratic world.

December 2022 Quarterly Update of the Campaign for the Abolition of the Death Penalty

Highlight

PGA welcomes the unprecedented support towards the adoption of the UN resolution A/RES/77/222, for a universal moratorium on the use of the death penalty, which took place on 15 December: 125 States voted in favor of this crucial instrument to advance international standards. This historic majority is the result of the growing progress of the abolitionist movement globally, but PGA regrets the negative shift of positions of certain UN Member States compared to the one 2020 vote, in particular those of Yemen and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which both voted against, whereas they respectively abstained and did not vote in 2020.

On the other hand, PGA and the World Coalition against the Death Penalty celebrated the 20th International Day against the Death Penalty on 10 October. One month later, Ensemble contre la peine de mort organized the 8th World Congress against the Death Penalty, in Berlin, from 15-18 November, an occasion to take stock of the situation of the use of the capital punishment worldwide, and to stress the key role played by civil society organizations in this fight.
