On 28th September, 2017, PGA organized a luncheon and strategic discussion on how the support for the Trust Fund for Victims (TFV), can be integrated into a Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy. The event was  hosted by the chair of the PGA European Parliamentary Group, Ms. Ana Maria Gomes, MEP, and attended by members of the European Parliament, leadership of the TFV at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and members of the corporate and philanthropic communities.

At the end of one of the bloodiest centuries in human history, the international community made a commitment to end impunity, prevent the gravest crimes known to humanity and bring justice to victims with the adoption of the Rome Statute that established the ICC. In July 2002, the TFV was born with the purpose of providing assistance to those, who have suffered from genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

In addition to the human toll, the economic impact of violence is felt across generations. In post-conflict environments, economic prosperity and growth can only be achieved by granting victims access to justice and the possibility to return to a dignified life. The TFV contributes to the realization of sustainable and long-lasting peace, economic well-being, and community resilience through the promotion of restorative justice and reconciliation.

In 9 years, more than 454,000 individuals and families affected by atrocities in northern Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo have benefitted from the TFV by being provided with crucial physical, psychological, and material support.

In the near future, the TFV aims to further expand its assistance to six countries. The contributions of individuals, organizations, and state parties is integral to fulfilling this mission and ensuring that victim survivors may lead a dignified life and envision a better future.

This event’s timing coincided with a renewed focus on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by the European Parliament. It provided an opportunity to exercise CSR in the most meaningful way by offering help to victims of mass atrocity crimes and to get acquainted with the achievements of the TFV.

Through its Campaign for the Rome Statute of the ICC, PGA mobilizes Parliamentarians to strengthen the TFV`s mandate to achieve one of the objectives of the ICC:  to provide justice to victims of mass atrocities, genocide and crimes against humanity.
