PGA expresses sincere condolences on the passing of its extraordinary former member, Prof. Vittorio Prodi

PGA would like to express its deep condolences and sorrow on the passing of Prof. Vittorio Prodi, former PGA member, in his native city, Bologna, on Sunday, 30 July 2023.

Prof. Prodi was an engaged PGA Member during the 10 years as an elected Member of the European Parliament during the 6th and 7th parliamentary terms, in particular in his position of the Chairperson of the PGA European Parliament Group in 2005-07.

  • Dr. David Donat Cattin, former PGA Secretary General

Prof. Prodi was a visionary, a generous and enlightened academic who devoted his life to the search for, and service to, the common good. Vittorio Prodi made an extraodinary contribution to all the PGA Campagns for human rights and intrernational justice while being the most progressive and forward-looking parliamentarian of his generation in addressing the causes and consequences of climate change, moving ahead with a proactive agenda on energy-change. I will never forget the outstanding generosity and the sense of principled security and firmness that Prof. Prodi was able to transmit to his collaborators and colleagues, even in the face of critical and urgent matters. Dr. David Donat Cattin, former PGA Secretary General

In early 2007, Prof. Vittorio Prodi, as a Member of the European Parliament and Chairperson of the PGA Group in the EP, made a written declaration with other MEPs on a "green hydrogen economy": a text that merits to be read today, more than 16 years after its adoption.

Some of his further remarkable activities as a PGA member included his insightful and inspirational speech at the Tokyo Annual Forum/CAP-ICC of 2006, where he addressed the issue of Human Security: Remarks by Prof. Vittorio Prodi: Human Security and Challenges for the 21st Century as well as his speech to the EP DROI Committee session in which he invited the PGA President to make a briefing before the Committee after a roundtable with the President of the ICC Judge Song: Cooperation of the European Parliament with the International Criminal Court (ICC).

PGA and its members honor the extraordinary work of Prof. Prodi, whose unwavering commitment to human rights, justice, and the rule of law in general, sets a shining example to legislators all over the world. His leadership and legacy will be always remembered amongst the PGA members who remain inspired by his dedication.

Our thoughts are with the family and spouse of Prof. Prodi.
