PGA condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the recent killing of Somali Legislator Mustafa Haji Maalim in front of his home.

"The assassination of Mr. Mustafa Haji Maalim MP is particularly tragic as it has taken place at a time of renewed hope for Somalia and its people. The murder of this Parliamentarian has also come at a very early stage in the life of the new parliament of Somalia whose work is so essential to the future of the country and is a pointed reminder of the enormity of the dangers and challenges still facing the country" remarked Dep. Lamine Thiam, MP (Senegal) Convenor of the Peace & Democracy Program of PGA.

PGA, and its global membership of over 1,000 MPs in over 120 countries worldwide calls on the authorities in Somalia to make every effort to bring to justice the perpetrators of this attack against democracy as quickly as possible and we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr Mustafa Haji Maalim MP.
