I welcome the recent announcement by the Government of Canada that it is to proceed with submitting to Parliament necessary legislation to allow for Canada to accede to the Arms Trade Treaty.
My colleagues and I look forward to making every effort to ensure speedy adoption and passage of all necessary legislation and amendments to legislation so that Canada can accede to the ATT without further delay.
However, I am concerned that the Government has indicated it will not raise existing standards for arms exports. The Government should also review all pending and existing arms contracts to ensure that they are consistent with both the spirit and letter of this Treaty, notwithstanding the fact Canada is not yet party to it, as well as to ensure conformity with existing domestic regulations and guidelines governing same.
I would like to take this opportunity to commend the efforts of Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) and all civil society groups, here in Canada, and around the world, that continue to advocate so tirelessly for the universal ratification and effective implementation of this vital treaty."
