On December 19, 2018, First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa launched the National Action Plan (NAP) and Communication Strategy Against Child Marriages. The strategy seeks to accelerate efforts towards ending child marriages in the country and forming structures to effectively coordinate, monitor and evaluate all initiatives against child marriages.

As Parliamentarians, we are working to ensure the success of the NAP in Zimbabwe. We have participated in several workshops and meetings on this issue and we have taken upon ourselves raising the issue in Parliament during the budget debates, introduce motions and ask policy questions during the Question and Answer Sessions.  We shall also sensitize our communities on the dangers of child marriages and male MPs have formed a “He for She” campaign program. Additionally, there is a mass advocacy group that will drive the issue of child marriages in Parliament and will engage with traditional leaders, schools, colleges and churches.

As Members of Parliament in Zimbabwe, we have placed emphasis on the following items to advance the NAP:

• Ensure girls who have experienced child marriages should be accommodated in schools.

• Government should allocate resources to assist young mothers to acquire basic education. Also non-formal education facilities should be accessible for pregnant victims of child marriage.

• Financially support young mothers to create income generating projects in their various communities.

• Ensure that schools have a curriculum on gender-based violence (GBV), Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), and information about the consequences of child marriage (comprehensive sexuality programs).

• There is a need for sensitization campaigns on child marriage countrywide.

• Facilitate access to family planning methods. This has been a great concern among young women.

• Engage and sensitize men on the dangers of child marriage.

• Enforce legislation that prosecute perpetrators so that they are accountable for their actions.

• Advocate for an increase in funds to scholarships and grants.

• During budget debate, MPs should raise the issue on funding for Victim-Friendly Units at police stations.

PGA members in the Parliament of Zimbabwe stand ready to work tirelessly in coordination with all appropriate agencies in guaranteeing our girls enjoy their childhood, have access to education and livelihood opportunities, and are free from all forms of violence. Only through effectively upholding their human rights can we really claim no one has been left behind.
