Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) joyously welcomes the release of Mr. Vladimir Kara-Murza, a courageous advocate for democracy and human rights and a long-time critic of the Russian Federation’s repressive regime.
Mr. Vladimir Kara-Murza was released on August 1, 2024, in a historic prisoner swap between Russia and the West, that also included the release of Alsu Kurmasheva, editor for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Oleg Orlov, co-chair of Memorial, a Russian human rights group, and Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, among the 24 people released.
We are elated by the release of Vladimir Kara-Murza, whose relentless pursuit of justice and democracy has been an inspiration to us all. The release is a powerful reminder of the importance of defending the fundamental freedoms that underpin just and equitable societies. Mr. Kara-Murza spent over two years in detention in Russia following his arrest on April 11, 2022, near his home in Moscow. Since September 2023, he had endured complete isolation in deteriorating conditions, following a harsh sentence in April 2023 to 25 years in a high-security penal colony – the strictest level within the Russian Federation’s penitentiary regime. His unwavering courage, resilience, and determination have been an inexhaustible inspiration to other democracy and human rights champions in his country and around the world.
For his commitment to justice, human rights, transparency and activism, PGA’s Board unanimously decided to confer its 2022 Democracy Defender Award to Mr. Kara-Murza on November 4, 2022. The Award honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and contribution to promoting peace, democracy, the rule of law, human rights, non-discrimination, and/or gender equality worldwide. PGA Board Member Sen. Boris Dittrich (The Netherlands) presented the DDA award to Ms. Evgenia Kara-Murza, on behalf of her spouse.
Vladimir Kara-Murza’s release is a cause for celebration and a testament to the strength of international solidarity. His courage and perseverance in the face of relentless adversity serve as a beacon of hope for advocates worldwide. His unwavering commitment to justice and human rights, despite the personal risks and sacrifices, exemplifies the true spirit of advocacy.
